Large Dog Beds and Pet Health
Large dog beds are something of a necessity for our beloved pets. While big dogs often like to stake out a spot on the sofa or other furniture and this is generally the impetus for getting them their own bedding, dog beds are also specifically designed to afford dogs a bit of comfort. They quickly become part of the dog's territory and can help alleviate some of the symptoms of problems that tend to affect larger breeds of dogs. They're available in many different fabrics and levels of softness which should suit any animal.
Large dog beds provide the same effect of insulating pets from the discomfort of sleeping on hard surfaces as do the beds humans use. Dogs, while they seem to make themselves comfortable just about anywhere, do prefer a soft sleeping surface. Some animal behavior specialists speculate that a dog's ritual of turning around in place several times before laying down is developed from making a soft mat of grass on which to sleep and that this habit has endured, even long after most dogs have become more accustomed to trying to win a spot on the bed than a spot in the grass.
Where some of the symptoms of aging are concerned, large dog beds can provide the animals with much comfort. Arthritis, hip dysplasia and other ailments tend to affect larger dogs. These conditions are very painful and, like humans who suffer from our equivalent disorders, dogs oftentimes simply want to lay in a soft bed and sleep away the worst flare-ups of such disorders. The soft surface provided by the bed can provide significant comfort and, like a comfy human bed, allow the dog to wake up feeling rejuvenated and very much comforted by a good period of restful sleep.
Large dog beds also allow dogs to have their own turf on which to sleep. While dogs will certainly tend to share their territory with family members—even the family cat, in most cases, the bed allows them to have a safe place where they know they're free to relax and have a good nap. These beds are generally washable which not only helps keep the beds themselves clean, but helps keep furniture clean by allowing the dog a comfortable place to sleep other than the expensive upholstery that is intended for the two-legged residents of the household.
